Learning The Problems
This is a listing of some of the types of "defects" you might find on your vehicles painted surfaces. Many of these can be removed with the correct products and procedures. We are providing this information to help inform our customers. An educated customer will be able to communicate to us at a higher level when talking about paint defects. Defects are not limited to these but we have chosen to list the defects we most encounter. A photo follows each description so you can better visualize the defects.
*Raildust / Embedded Misc Containments
This is when contaminates from the atmosphere like rail dust, iron particles, rust particles, etc imbedded themselves in the paint. This happens over time and happens regardless of the part of the country you live in. It happens more significantly if you have a vehicle that is left outside all the time.

*Spiderweb /Cobweb Swirls
These two terms can be used interchangeably for the same paint defect. The terms spiderweb/cobweb are because of the fact the the swirls in the paint seem to have a circular pattern or round pattern to them, these patterns can look like a spiderweb/cobweb and that is where the name comes from. In reality these scratches are not actually in circular patterns but are random. When they are viewed with a intense point of light the scratches reflect the light back creating the appearance of a circular pattern to the scratches. These are most often, but not only, caused by upkeep of the vehicle, that is the washing and drying, Quick detailing, and drive through car washes.

*Rotary Buffer Trail/Holograms Swirls
These two terms can be used interchangeably for the same paint defect. These defects are circular scratches instilled into paint by a rotary buffer being used to detail the paint. They can happen from a wool pad or a foam pad. These are caused due to the direct drive rotating motion of a rotary buffer. Rotary Buffer Trail/Holograms Swirls usually appear in a Zig-Zag type pattern. The defect copies the path the buffer was moved over the paint. You most often wont see them on freshly detailed vehicles as the defects are filled with product. They often appear after the first subsequent wash after the detail.

*Water Spots - Type A, Type B, Type C
Water Spots are a little more involved then most customers think. There are different types of water spots.
Type A water spots are usually mineral deposits on the paint surface that is left behind after water with minerals has evaporated off the surface. These mineral deposits can often be washed off the paint. Sometimes these deposits can also leave a light imprint in the paint in the outside edge of the spot. This is also classified as a Type I water spot defect.
Type B water spots are caused by certain sources of water. The water sources can be rain with airborne pollution mixed in (so called “acid rain”), recycled sprinkler water with chemicals in it, or well water, which can have corrosive elements. These sources lead to a water spot that actually etches into the paint. This will leave a mark or depression in the painted surface where the water dried.
Type C water Spots most often are a stain in the painted surface. This stain may appear similar to fading. This kind of water spot usually happens to single stage paint as that kind of paint tends to be porous in nature and will sometimes absorb water.

*Tracers
These are scratches left by the sanding process (by hand wet or dry) when a vehicle is painted. They can be found mostly in straight-lines due to the technique most shops use when they are wet sanding. Tracers can appear after you cut the paint with a compound/machine and remove shallow scratches. Sense sanding marks and shallow types of scratches are removed from the paint, what remains, sometimes are sanding marks at a deeper level and these are called tracers.

*Pigtails
These are scratches left by the sanding process by a DA sander (wet or dry) when a vehicle is painted. What usually happens to cause these is that an abrasive particle of material gets caught between the paint and the surface of the sanding paper. The DA sander moves in an oscillating pattern, as it does it grinds/scratches the abrasive particle into the paint surface. These scratches can look like a pigtail that is curly and that is where the name comes from.

In our experience, businesses that use that pricing tricks will just add additional work and cost once they have your vehicle to work on. It’s no bargain for you, if you're paying a higher rate and for the same rate you could have had the work done by Final Touch Detailing. If you choose Final Touch Detailing, then you can have your work done by professionals who provides a complete no cost estimate before doing any work.
